The Housing Authority assists NGOs that provide housing service to persons in need of housing. Assistance is given in form of premises, by sale or lease or in form of cash grants for alterations or repairs to the premises used by the applicant organisation, including lift installations. Contributions to salaries are only given in exceptional cases.
The following are some of the grants allocated during the years 2010 and 2011 by the Housing Authority.
• Fondazzjoni Nazareth:
This organization aids persons with a disability and was granted €58,234.33 financing the refurbishing project of Dar Jean Vanier in Żejtun.
• Caritas Malta:
Caritas is an organisation which addresses the rehabilitation from substance abuse. The Housing Authority grants €3,354.30 yearly for rental subsidy of a house in Santa Venera.
• Conservatorio Vincenzo Bugeja:
This is an institute for young girls, which was granted €8,305.61 for new bathrooms and membrane works.
• Richmond Foundation:
A sum of €27,787.89 was allocated for refurbishment works for a new home in Gwardamangia. Another sum of €19,802 was allocated for a new project, addressing semi–independent living, in St.Venera. These premises will house a number of homeless women suffering from mental illness. An additional €2,912.50 was granted for finishing works in the new allocated premises.
• Fondazzjoni Mid-Dlam Għad-Dawl:
This organisation works with prison inmates and their families. It was granted €18,752.15 for refurbishment works to house ex-prisoners who find themselves homeless after serving their sentence.
• Ejjew Għandi, Children’s Homes:
This establishment was granted €16,925 to upgrade the child care centre in Żejtun.
• Dar Merħba Bik:
A grant of €58,234.33 was allocated to refurbish a number of rooms to serve as a private room for women victims of violence and their children. This also helped to finance the instalment of 3 solar water heaters.
Inspire is an organisation which helps both adults and children with disabilities. The Housing Authority granted €14,687.50 for finishing of new premises in Tarxien.
• Dar Sagra Familja:
This is an institute for children which was granted €1,380 for membrane works as well as €6,621.58 for renovation of façade.
• Multiple Sclerosis Society:
The Multiple Sclerosis Society provides voluntary means to expand and enhance public awareness, individual and family services, and rehabilitation in Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The Housing Authority granted € 3,260 for 2 bathrooms in premises in Msida.
• Franciscan Friars:
Franciscan Friars received €4,660 for lifting aid.
• Equal Partners Foundation:
The Equal Partners Foundation is a non-profit foundation providing individualized support programmes to over 250 children and adults with disabilities and/or learning difficulties and their families. It was granted €1,630 for the installation of a bathroom in their premises.
• Aġenzija Sapport:
This is an organisation committed to enhance the quality of life of disabled persons. The Housing Authority granted €3,260 for bathrooms Birżebbuga premises.
• Dar Qalb ta’ Ġesu:
This is a shelter and integrated service centre. The Housing Authority granted €20,000 for lifting aids and €5,000 for finishing works of an apartment in Santa Venera, which will serve as passage way temporary accommodation for families and victims of domestic violence.
• Fondazzjoni Wens:
This organisation works to improve the quality of life of disabled persons. The Housing Authority granted €10,000 for new lifting aid to support disabled service users.
During the years 2010 and 2011 the Housing Authority granted NGO’s the following premises to be used either by their service users who are homeless or as offices. These NGOs benefit from a 40% subsidy on the commercial rental rate.
• Equal Partners Foundation: Shop 13, Triq il-Wied, Msida.
• Malta Wireless and Talking Books for the Blind Foundation: Garage 76, Triq Pietro Darmenia, Pembroke.
• Mount Carmel Hospital: Apartment 4, Entrance 3, Axtart street, tal-Ġinwi, Marsaxlokk and Block F, Flat 3, Karamelli street, Mġarr.
• Victim Support Group: Shop 4, Conception Street, Msida.
• Multiple Sclerosis Society: Shop 16, Entrance 187, Valley Road, Msida and Shop 17, Entrance 188, Valley Road, Msida.
• Richmond Foundation: Apartment 2, Block 2, Independence street, Żebbug.
• Inspire: Maisonette 3, Alfier de Medran Street, Tarxien.
Appoġġ benefit from the yearly sum of €10,500 being services paid for a social worker who represents the Housing Authority at the Cottonera Resource Centre.
