Making my House a Better Place

A scheme to help owner occupiers over the age of 60 to carry out adaptation works in their residence to render it more accessible and hazard free and in order to help them remain in the commodity of their home and in the community as long as possible.

•This scheme is open to vulnerable persons who are owner occupiers but are not able to access any Housing Authority adaptation schemes.

•The residences must be in need of:

a.structural repairs;

b.better amenities;

c.better provision for accessibility and safety facilities.

•A grant up to a maximum of €15,000 is given which includes:

a.an estimate of works

b.obtaining the necessary permits

c.engaging contractors and supervision of works

d.the necessary assistance while the works are being carried out

e.coordination with other agencies to provide the necessary support in other issues according to the needs of the person

•Requests under this scheme can be submitted by applicants by filling an application form provided by the Housing Authority. Other requests can be referred to the Housing Authority, including the name of the person concerned together with a brief description about the difficulties related to the accommodation from Local Councils, parish priests, family doctors, Members of Parliament, social workers, agencies within the social environment, recognised voluntary organisations.

•Assistance can be given for the following works and improvements:

-repairs to dangerous structures and repairs to structure including façades ;

-the replacement of old water and electricity installations;

-improvement works in the bathroom in order to render them more accessible to applicant’s needs;

-replacement/laying of floor tiles to render premises to become habitable;

-replacement/repairs to an old drainage system or its substitution;

-replacement/the repair of external doors and apertures and balconies;

-the provision of water proofing to the roofs of the dwelling house;

-appropriate improvements and damp proofing works as permanent solutions to eliminate problems of rising damp which cause inconveniences to occupiers;

-painting/whitewashing;

-professional fees and permit fees (only if a MEPA permit is required);

-works to improve security in the residence of the applicants;

-works to improve accessibility in the residence of the applicants.
